Causes of mental disturbance

A person who feels mentally and emotionally confused and mixed up might ask himself what the cause of his problem is. He needs to understand something. The cause of his problem is very likely not a single cause but the combined effect of a number of causes. There is Cause 1 producing its harmful mentally perturbing effects, Cause 2 producing its bad effects, Cause 3 producing its effects, ... and finally Cause n producing its effects. In addition, some effects may interact with other effects in complicated ways to produce other effects. Thus it can become a large and complicated problem with complicated effects. So to find his way out of the ugly maze he finds himself in he needs to ask himself what all of the causes of his troubles are. I would say the best way out for him is to pursue the Way of Thought, Understanding, and Truth. In pursuing this way I believe there is a good chance he will, with time, finally find his way out of the maze he is in.

What are the kinds of things that can cause mental problems? Wrong premises and assumptions. Wrong outlooks, attitudes, and values. Wrong habits. Wrong ways of thinking and feeling. Wrong ways of responding to life and situations. Envy. Jealousy. Pride. Hatred. Frustration. Anger. Discouragement. Vexation. Depression. Demoralization. Pressures. Stresses. Fears. Self-doubt. Insecurity. Lack of confidence. Guilt.

Consider the following for some insight:

Stay away from these demons: Pride, Anger, Hatred, Lust, Envy and Jealousy

On pride and humility

Example. A stew made up of such components as 1) high pride, 2) great anger at society for perceived injustices, 3) lack of confidence, inferiority complex, 4) insecurity, 5) high stresses and pressures (as one might find in a highly competitive live-or-die situation), 6) unrealistically high and idealistic goals and expectations for oneself, and 7) youthful ignorance, lack of experience in life, lack of perspective on life, can lead to psychological stresses and distortions stemming from each of these various causes and thus to large and complicated emotional problems.

The very best advice that I could give someone for getting themselves straightened out is found in the following:
