What creates moral character?

What is it that creates moral character in a man? What is it
within a man that causes him to resist the forces of temptation
and evil within himself and do what he should do and not what
he wants to do? What is it that can give man the strength,
will and motivation to resist the forces of evil within himself
and do what is right? It is Understanding, spiritual
knowledge. It is love of God, Goodness and Virtue, the desire to
obey God and be true to him.

As lovers of God we resist the calls of the lower nature within
us, we resist the temptation to go for the temporary pleasure,
and, instead, do what conscience and intellect require.

Habits of doing what is right, conscientiousness, honesty,
trustworthiness, etc. have as their underlying cause love of God,
Virtue, and Goodness. They reflect a commitment to God and
   Goodness.
