We are spirits imprisoned within bodies

We are, each of us, spirits imprisoned within bodies; spirits
constrained by the limitations of bodies. Without the body the
spirit would be free. Tied to the body it must endure whatever
constraints, pains, temptations, etc. that are imposed on it by
the body. These constraints, pains, etc. can be both physical
and mental for the mind is also a part of the body. The mind
has its own constraints, its strengths and weaknesses, its
abilities and inabilities, its particular characteristics and
peculiarities. We are each of us saddled with a particular
body and a particular mind that we must live with, endure, cope
with. When we die the spirit is released from the body and all
   its constraints.
