The vicissitudes of life

Life has its vicissitudes. It is a fact of life. They may occur in the form of health problems, job loss, death of a loved one, marriage problems, problems with children, etc. There are no guarantees in this life. Bad things can happen to anyone. But bad things happen much more frequently to foolish men than to wise men. There is a reason for this. What is it? The wise man lives his life in such a way as to minimize the risk of various bad things happening to him.

Take the misfortune of health problems. Anyone can develop health problems. But the wise man takes care of his health. He keeps his weight down to a healthy level, takes care to eat in a healthy way, walks or jogs daily, does exercises, etc. He cannot eliminate the chance of health problems but he can reduce the likelihood of them greatly.

Take the danger of losing your job. Anyone can lose their job. Your company may downsize and you may be one of those who are released. Or you may for one reason or another just get fired, fairly or unfairly. Losing your job can be traumatic. You can’t eliminate that danger but you can act so as to minimize that danger, conduct your life so as to minimize that danger. You can be security conscious when making decisions. And you can do something else. You can save money, invest it, build up a reserve, so you have the peace of knowing that if you did lose your job you would not be in a very difficult position. You can become frugal and thrifty in your habits, putting money aside. The wise man lives simply, is frugal, and saves his money.

Marriage problems happen. But you can act so as to minimize them. You can be very thoughtful and careful about who you marry. And once you are married you can try your best to make the marriage work. You can be thoughtful, kind, understanding, flexible, etc. in dealing with your spouse.

Problems with children occur. But you can minimize the likelihood by raising them well, being strict with them, demanding obedience.

Many people become victims of alcoholism and drug abuse. A wise man stays strictly away from alcohol and drugs.

In general, wisdom dictates avoiding risky behavior. A wise man doesn’t gamble. He takes the safe route. He avoids danger.
