God is merciful and forgiving to those who fear and serve him

God is very severe with the immoral, the wicked, the godless, those who do not fear him, those who just live as they wish. He holds a hell in reserve for the ungodly and wicked. But it is important to understand that he is not just categorically harsh and severe. He is indeed very merciful, forgiving, and understanding with those who fear and serve him, those who take him seriously and attempt to follow his commandments and teachings.

1 Pet 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

Psalms 103:8-18 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children; To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.

Prov 15:29 The Lord is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.

Prov 15:9 The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the Lord: but he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.

Prov 15:8 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

If you want to have God on your side, if you want to have a friend in him, you must repent of your sin, turn away from it, and obey God by living as a true child of God ought to live by following his commandments and teachings (i.e. following the teachings of Jesus).
