Cause of suppressed inner anger

   Q. What causes suppressed inner anger?

   A. Reaction to attitudes, ideas, and sentiments current in
society that are against you. Examples: Idea of IQ and IQ
tests might cause suppressed anger in people who are slow. The
social idea or attitude that negros are inferior might cause
suppressed anger in negros (even though not all whites, perhaps
only a small minority, subscribe to the idea). An idea may be
especially irritating and disconcerting if there is some truth
in it, some justification for it, or it is very difficult to
argue against. In such a case a person can start chafing
against the idea, get angrier and angrier the more he thinks
about it, "hang-up" on it, develop a complex on it, and become
bitter and angry against people and society. Note that a
current idea or attitude is something very illusive and
intangible and that anger directed at such a thing is different
from that directed toward something concrete (like another
person). You can't call it into a fist fight, challenge it, or
demand a retraction. You just have to live with it, accept it.
More than that, the idea may die, go out of fashion, and yet
still live in your imagination; only a few people may believe
in it and you may still be making a big thing of it.
