Why the modern evangelicals are way off track
I personally believe that the modern evangelicals are way off track. Why do I believe this? Where is their error? In what ways are they off track?
They are off track because of their preoccupation with complicated dogma, doctrine and theology — preoccupied to the exclusion, total omission of certain fundamental truths that are so very important in life. What are these fundamental truths that are so important in life? Very briefly, the importance of the following qualities in one’s character:
1. Honesty
2. Chastity
3. Kindness
4. Humility
5. Patience
6. Peacefulness
The Bible teaches the importance of all of these. The Book of Proverbs talks about them. Jesus talks about their importance. In addition all of the great thinkers such as Aristotle, Buddha, and Confucius have spoken of their importance. People in every country and culture through the ages have understood their importance. It is not that everyone practices them. For various reasons, most people do not practice the most of them. But they are of central importance to spiritual health. I believe they represent deep truths written deeply into each of us. I think they are like conscience. We violate them to our own harm. Abstruse dogma, doctrine and theory is no substitute for them.
We live in a world of 8.3 billion souls. These are divinely imposed rules on how each soul is to treat another soul. We are not supposed to do harm to another soul. We are supposed to treat others as we would like to be treated.

So what do I have to say?
Don’t lose your honesty in life. It is a very precious possession in life. Perhaps the most precious of all. Don’t let circumstances turn you away from it. Don’t let the Devil pervert your honesty.
Don’t lose your moral standards. Cling to them. Even when the entire world seems to have rejected them and everyone about you seems to have lost them.
Stay kind. Reject its opposite. Let kindness be your rule. Even with people you don’t like.
Be humble. Reject attitudes, outlooks and behavior that elevate you above others.
Be patient. Curb impatience.
Avoid strife and argument. Try to keep things peaceful. Pick your words carefully.
Evangelicalism is a religion of orators. Whether they be evangelical preachers or politicians, I distrust orators. The best source of truth is through experience in the world, reading and honest thought.
Why do the evangelicals not teach the above? Because they say that salvation is by faith and not by works. In their mind, teaching the above would be teaching a religion of works.
