Connection between involvement in social media and mental problems

ChatGPT question: What things about social media cause harm to children?

Answer.

Several aspects of social media can negatively affect children, especially when use is frequent, unsupervised, or begins at very young ages. Key sources of harm include:

1. Social comparison and low self-esteem

● Children often compare themselves to idealized images of peers, influencers, or celebrities.

● Filters, edited photos, and curated lives can create unrealistic expectations.

● This can lead to body dissatisfaction, low self-worth, or feelings of inadequacy.

2. Cyberbullying

● Online bullying can be persistent and harder to escape than in-person bullying.

● It may include harassment, exclusion, threats, or spreading rumors.

● Cyberbullying is linked to depression, anxiety, and self-harm behaviors.

3. Excessive screen time and addiction-like behaviors

● Many platforms are designed to be highly engaging, encouraging compulsive scrolling.

● Overuse can reduce sleep, physical activity, and time spent on homework or in-person relationships.

● Sleep disruption, in particular, has strong links to mood problems in children and teens.

4. Exposure to inappropriate content

● Children may encounter:

    ● Violence

    ● Sexual content

    ● Hate speech

    ● Extremism

    ● Misinformation

● Often, kids are not emotionally equipped to interpret or contextualize such material.

5. Privacy risks

● Children may share personal information without understanding the consequences.

● Strangers can contact kids through messaging features, increasing risks of grooming or exploitation.

● Data collected about children can be used for targeted advertising or profiling.

6. Peer pressure and risky behavior

● Trends and challenges may encourage unsafe or harmful activities.

● “Likes” and follower counts can drive children to seek approval through risky posts or behaviors.

7. Anxiety and Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)

● Constant updates create pressure to stay connected.

● Children can feel left out or socially excluded if they see friends participating in events without them.

8. Distorted sense of reality

● Overexposure to exaggerated lifestyles may make children undervalue their own real-world experiences.

● Can interfere with healthy identity development.

What do I think? This ChatGPT answer sounds very insightful to me. I understand that 40% of 18 year olds in America have a mental health diagnosis. I suspect that involvement in social media has a lot to do with that. I have personally never had any social media account. That is not accident. I think it is highly imprudent simply to put one’s personal information on social media — expose yourself to the world, make oneself public in that way. I suspect social media has done great damage not only to children but also to adults.
