Why does the free enterprise system work so much better than Communism?
Why does the free enterprise system work so much better than Communism in providing people with food, clothing, housing, services and other things they need? It works better and more efficiently because in the free enterprise system it is the desire to make money that is the force that provides people with the food, clothing, housing and other things they need whereas with Communism it is government bureaucracy that provides them with the food, clothing, housing and other things they need. The desire to make money is just a far stronger and more effective and efficient force than government bureaucracy in doing anything. If there is money to be made there will always be people who will find a way to do it in a free enterprise system.
Why does the free enterprise system give goods at better prices than a government bureaucracy? Competition. Healthy competition among businesses ensures good prices. Healthy competition insures that businesses prioritize efficiency in their operation.
In addition to this, in a competitive, free market system there is a very powerful force pushing sellers of goods and services to continually improve their good or service and lower its cost whereas in a Communist or socialist type system this force doesn’t exist. That force is competition. In a free market system, if you don’t figure out ways to make a better product, improve your product, whether it is automobiles, houses or dish soap — one that is more attractive, works better, has more features, utilizes the latest technology, etc. — a competitor will and steal all of your business. In a system that is state owned and run, as in Communism, this incentive just doesn’t exist. There is no competition and buyers are forced to just accept what you offer, however expensive and trashy it might be. If you offer a service and your service is trashy, the customer has no choice but to accept it. That is why the housing, automobiles and services of the Soviet Union were so inferior to those produced in the West.
Bureaucracies are always inefficient and wasteful. Why? Because there is no incentive to reduce waste and be efficient. Bureaucracies tend to acquire bloat. Government workers are always very protective of their jobs and are unlikely to complain, report inefficiency, or say anything if they are not busy or being utilized.
One of the basic facts of life: Everyone acts in his own best interest. No one acts against his own interest. If an employee looks around and sees that things are a muddle, that people are not busy and that there are more employees than are needed, that he is not being well utilized, then it is in his own best interest to keep his mouth shut. Either that or leave. If good jobs are hard to find he may do some calculations and decide it is in his own best interest to keep his mouth shut. This is especially so if his job is a well-paying job with good medical and retirement benefits.
In short, private enterprise tends to be efficient and government tends to be inefficient.
Bloated bureaucracy. A "bloated bureaucracy" is an over-complicated system of rules and processes that is inefficient, wasteful, and overly large, often characterized by excessive paperwork, redundant tasks, and a lack of accountability. This can apply to government agencies, large corporations, or other organizations, leading to slow decision-making, high costs, and a disconnect from the intended purpose or the needs of the public. Critics often argue for reducing its size through reforms, streamlining processes, and cutting wasteful spending. (AI Overview)
How are the prices of goods and services determined in a free enterprise system? They are determined by the marketplace. They are determined by the forces of competition — by competitive bidding. How are they determined in a Communist system? Whatever the government decides to charge.
