What kind of person was Jesus?


What kind of person was Jesus? What type of adjectives would describe him?


I think one incident recorded in the New Testament gives a good insight into this. It is how he dealt with the adulterous woman in the incident recorded in John 8:2-11.

John 8:2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.


3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,


4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.


5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?


6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.


7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.


8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.


9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.


10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?


11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

This passage shows that he was a kind, understanding, compassionate person.

7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.


8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.


9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.


10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.


11 Give us this day our daily bread.


12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.


13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.


14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:


15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.


16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.


17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;


18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.


19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:


20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:


21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:


14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

Adjectives describing a true Christian



When I was young I attended a fundamentalist Baptist church. I wasn’t happy with the church but I couldn’t put my finger on what was wrong with it. It took me years before I figured it out. What was wrong with it? It is the preoccupation of the preachers with obtuse theology and dogma (presumably things they had been taught in the seminary they attended). It was a preoccupation with complex theory as opposed to practice. What is important is not Christian theology and dogma regarding salvation based on the theology of John Calvin or obscure verses in the book of Romans. It is the outlooks and attitudes that you carry in this life. It is things like humility, love of honesty, inclination toward peacefulness, kindness, patience, etc. that define your mind and character. It is the right habits in regard to the way you think. These right habits are the things that Jesus taught and they are the things that are really important in life. The right outlooks and attitudes give mental health. The wrong ones give mental dysfunction and unhappiness. All this is something that I understand now but didn’t understand when I was young.
