On Example, Consistency, Genuineness, Honesty and Influence

A good example is the best sermon.

   Conduct has the loudest tongue.

   The parent's life is the child's copy-book.

As the old birds sing, the young ones twitter.

Will not a man listen? Be silent; and prove thy maxim by
   example.

We live in an age that hath more need of good examples than
   precepts.

Never fear, thou losest not the hold, though thy mouth doth not
   render a reason.
                                                       M. Tupper

An indulgent mother maketh a sluttish daughter.

When the dam leaps over, the kid follows.

Be sparing of advice by words, but teach thy lesson by example.

                                                     M. Tupper

Precepts may lead --- but examples draw.

People look at my six days in the week, to see what I mean on
   the seventh.

Who goes himself is in earnest; who sends is indifferent.

A good gaper makes two gapers.

When you obey your superior, you instruct your inferior.

   It becomes not a law-maker to be a law-breaker.

The consciousness that some are hearing cometh as a care; The
sense that some are watching near bindeth thee to caution.

The rotten apple injures his neighbor.

A picture hath ruined souls, or raised them to commerce with
   the skies.

Mind hath its influence on mind; and no man is free but when
   alone.

Be the same thing that ye would be called.

Who don't keep faith with God won't keep it with man.

The will steadfast to the truth --- this is fidelity.

An honest man's the noblest work of God.

Of all crafts, to be an honest man is the master-craft.

Honesty is exact to a penny.

The shortest and surest way to live with honor in this world is
to be in reality what we would appear to be; and if we observe
we shall find that all human virtues increase and strengthen
themselves by practice and experience of them.

                                                   Socrates

There is a transcendent power in example. We reform others
   unconsciously, when we walk uprightly.

                                             Mad. Swetchine

Men trust rather to their eyes than to their ears. The effect
of precepts is, therefore, slow and tedious, while that of
   examples is summary and effectual.

                                                Seneca

Example is more forcible than precept. People look at
my six days in the week to see what I mean on the seventh.

                                                   Cecil

I am satisfied that we are less convinced by what we hear than
   by what we see.

                                                Herodotus

No man is so insignificant as to be sure his example can do no
   hurt.

                                                Lord Clarendon

Be a pattern to others, and then all will go well; for as a
whole city is infected by the licentious passions and vices of
great men, so it is likewise reformed by their moderation.

                                                   Cicero

In early life I had nearly been betrayed into the principles
of infidelity; but there was one argument in favor of
Christianity that I could not refute, and that was the
consistent character and example of my own father.

Thou canst not rebuke in children what they see practised in
thee. Till reason be ripe, examples direct more than precepts.
Such as is thy behavior before thy children's faces, such is
   theirs behind thy back.

                                                    Quarles

Live with wolves, and you will learn to howl.

                               Spanish Proverb

Example has more followers than reason. We unconsciously
imitate what pleases us, and approximate to the characters we
most admire. A generous habit of thought and action carries
   with it an incalculable influence.

                                                 Bovee

You can preach a better sermon with your life than with your
   lips.

                                              Goldsmith

The conscience of children is formed by the influences that
surround them; their notions of good and evil are the result of
   the moral atmosphere they breathe.

                                                 Richter

Of all commentaries upon the Scriptures, good examples are the
   best and the liveliest.

                                                      Donne

None preaches better than the ant, and she says nothing.

                                              Franklin

A world of mischief may be done by a single example of avarice
or luxury. One voluptuous palate makes many more.

                                                  Seneca

Whatever parent gives his children good instruction, and sets
them at the same time a bad example, may be considered as
bringing them food in one hand, and poison in the other.

                                                    Balguy

Not the cry, but the flight of the wild duck, leads the flock
   to fly and follow.

                                        Chinese Proverb

We are all of us more or less echoes repeating involuntarily
the virtues, the defects, the movements, and the characters of
   those among whom we live.

                                                   Joubert

Nothing is so infectious as example.

                            Charles Kingsley

We can do more good by being good, than in any other way.

                                                 Rowland Hill

Example is the school of mankind; they will learn at no other.

                                                            Burke
