 ON FAITH AND WORKS 8/98

Are we saved by faith or by works? How important are works?
Let review what the Bible has to say on the subject.

  SCRIPTURES ON FAITH AND WORKS

Rom 9:32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but
as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that
   stumblingstone;

Gal 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of
the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have
believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the
faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the
works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Gal 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the
Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Gal 3:5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and
worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the
law, or by the hearing of faith?

Gal 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under
the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that
continueth not in all things which are written in the book of
   the law to do them.

Eph 2:8-10 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that
not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: {9} Not of works,
lest any man should boast. {10} For we are his workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before
ordained that we should walk in them.

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done,
but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of
   regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

James 2:14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say
he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

James 2:17-18 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead,
being alone. {18} Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I
have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will
show thee my faith by my works.

James 2:20-22 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith
without works is dead? {21} Was not Abraham our father
justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the
altar? {22} Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by
   works was faith made perfect?

James 2:24-26 Ye see then how that by works a man is
justified, and not by faith only. {25} Likewise also was not
Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the
messengers, and had sent them out another way? {26} For as the
body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead
   also.

Rev 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the
churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and
hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your
   works.

Rev 20:12-13 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand
before God; and the books were opened: and another book was
opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out
of those things which were written in the books, according to
their works. {13} And the sea gave up the dead which were in
it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in
them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

SCRIPTURES ON IMPORTANCE OF GOOD WORKS

Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may
see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in
   heaven.

Acts 9:36 Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named
Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman
was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.

Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus
unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should
   walk in them.

1 Tim 2:9-10 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves
in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with
broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; {10} But
(which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

1 Tim 5:10 Well reported of for good works; if she have
brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have
washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if
she have diligently followed every good work.

1 Tim 6:17-18 Charge them that are rich in this world, that
they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in
   the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; {18}
That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to
   distribute, willing to communicate;

2 Tim 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God,
and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction,
for instruction in righteousness: {17} That the man of God may
be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Titus 2:7 In all things showing thyself a pattern of good
works: in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,

Titus 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us
from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people,
   zealous of good works.

Titus 3:8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will
that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in
God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are
   good and profitable unto men.

Titus 3:14 And let ours also learn to maintain good works for
necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.

Heb 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto
   love and to good works:

1 Pet 2:12 Having your conversation honest among the
Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers,
they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify
God in the day of visitation.

SCRIPTURES ON THE IMPORTANCE OF OBEDIENCE TO GOD

which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and
   mother.

forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some
   thirtyfold.

Matthew 13:23 But he that received seed into the good ground
is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also
beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some
   sixty, some thirty.

all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

   things which I say?

Luke 6:47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and
doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like: {48} He is
like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the
foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream
beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for
it was founded upon a rock.

Luke 8:15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an
honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and
   bring forth fruit with patience.

my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

Luke 11:28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that

me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we
will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do.
   Arise, let us go hence.

love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide
   in his love.

   you.

John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and
ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and
that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of
the Father in my name, he may give it you.

Acts 4:19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them,
Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you
more than unto God, judge ye.

said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my
absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

1 John 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep
   his commandments.

1 John 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his
commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1 John 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the
love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

1 John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also
so to walk, even as he walked.

1 John 2:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof:
but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

   pleasing in his sight.

Revelation 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments,
that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in
through the gates into the city.
