Cause of mental problems
I believe that the cause of most mental problems lies somewhere
in one or more of the following: basic assumptions, beliefs,
ideas, values, outlooks, attitudes. That is, I believe that
for a particular mental problem there is some offending basic
assumption, belief, idea, value, outlook, or attitude that is
causing it (or perhaps some combination of them). I believe if
that belief, attitude, etc. that is causing the problem for
some reason changes then the mental problem will disappear.
The problem is to identify the offending assumption, attitude,
etc. and induce a change. People as they live life develop
attitudes, assumptions, values, etc. that they cling to and are
likely to carry all their lives unless, for some reason, they
come to question them and change them. The basic attitudes,
assumptions, etc. that we carry determine how we deal with
life, respond to situations, handle problems, etc. The right
ones produce a calm, healthy, well-balanced person. The wrong
ones cause problems.
