The self



   The self.  The thinking, feeling, acting self that is conscious 
   of itself and aware of its distinction from the selves of 
   others and from the objects of its thought and other operations 
   (F & W Dictionary definition of the "ego").  What is it capable 
   of?  Let us list what it is capable of: 

        desires, wants
        fears
        hatred, bitterness, resentment, hostility, animosity
        attitudes, outlooks, values
        actions
        thinking, reflecting
        learning, observing
        knowledge of right and wrong
        pain, hurt
        pleasure, enjoyment
        bodily appetites, needs and demands
        remembering, reminiscence, memory
        ambition
        pride, egoism
        imagination 
        emotional attachment
        dreaming
        hopes
        low self-esteem, lack of confidence, inferiority complex
        shyness
        envy
        jealousy

        

   Q. What are the main things that drive the self?

   A. That depends on the person.  Some of the most common are:

        bodily appetites, needs and desires
        ambition
        quest for truth and understanding
        sense of responsibility
        fear
        anger
        hatred
