The central role played by the need for the
necessities of life
When I was a boy I took the necessities of life --- food,
shelter, and clothing --- for granted. It was just there --- a
given. As to how it got there, I hardly gave a thought. I
only knew, in a nebulous way, that it was there by way of
Mother and Father. I was not much interested in such practical
aspects of existence as that. I was an idealist, a dreamer; my
mind was in the clouds. Practical matters were uninteresting
and depressing. How little I realized the central role that
the need for the necessities (food, shelter and clothing) plays
in the lives of all humanity --- how it forces them into
lifetimes of slavery to jobs they hate; forces them into doing
many things they don't want to do; forces them into lives of
moral prostitution, spiritual sell-out and slavery (for to hold
onto a job people will prostitute themselves in many ways).
