We are all basically alone in our journey through this life

A fellow in a TV program about marriage last night made a point
that struck me as quite profound. He pointed out that we are
all basically alone in our journey through this life. He said,
"We are born alone. We die alone. And we are alone the most
of the time in between. We are alone the vast portion of every
day. The time we spend with our mate may be as little as 20
minutes in a day." Another good point made in the program was
that the special feelings of love, infatuation or romance
experienced by people in the beginning quickly fade away. What
determines whether a marriage will work or not is not these
feelings but things like mutual compatibility. The best
marriages end up more like relationships of good friendship
than anything else. The best marriages usually start out as
two people who are just comfortable around each other and like
   each other, as honest friendships.
