The pursuits of life

What things do people pursue in life? What do they chase
after? Let us attempt to list them:

      - pleasure - socializing
      - fun - social status
      - entertainment - high paying jobs
      - sex - wealth
      - eating - power
      - friendship - fame
      - acceptance - recognition
      - big cars - financial security
      - big, lovely houses - children
      - luxury - ease
      - many possessions - comfort
      - alcohol and drugs - sleep
      - thrills, excitement

There is another list of things that a certain select few
people through the ages have pursued. Let us list them:

      - spiritual truth - the welfare of others
      - wisdom - understanding of oneself
      - spiritual understanding - inner peace
      - knowledge - good health
      - peacefulness - emotional balance
      - marital peace and harmony - good children

What is more important in life --- spiritual understanding or
     pleasure?

What is more important in life --- many possessions or a good
     marriage?

What is more important in life --- inner peace or the
     acceptance of others?

What is more important in life --- social status or
     understanding of oneself?

What is more important in life --- good eating or good health?

What is really important in life and what isn't? What things
should we pursue? Where ought our priorities to be in this
     life?
