The heart and core of true religion --- self-denial

   Self-indulgence, self-gratification, hedonism. To simply
follow one's impulses, feelings, desires and appetites wherever
they may lead, without regard for other people or conscience.
The way of pure selfishness. It's opposite: To put down those
desires, to deny one's self; to curb those impulses, desires
and appetites out of regard for God, conscience, knowledge of
right, and concern for one's fellow man. It is the way of
selflessness. It calls for self-control and self-discipline.
It is the way of self-denial and self-discipline. It is taught
by the Bible. It is also taught by many other religions of the
world --- Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, etc..
