On pride and ambition

   Reality and life can be very unfair and unjust.  If you have no 
   pride, no sense of self-importance, no ambition, if you just 
   float along with the current, you are relatively immune to it.  
   On the other hand, if you have great pride, a great sense of 
   self-importance, great ambition, and are driving hard towards a 
   definite goal, you are then very vulnerable.  It is then that 
   you most feel unfairness and injustice, that you are most 
   sensitive to it.  If you are proud, you are upset and angered 
   by every slight.  If you are ambitious, pushing hard toward 
   some goal, you are upset by every unfair impediment, angered by 
   every obstruction.  If you are proud and ambitious you can find 
   yourself buffeted, impeded and threatened on every hand.  Life 
   can serve out many injustices.  Life is hard and you can soon 
   find yourself an embittered and angry person.
