As we become serious about god, earnestly try
to improve ourselves for his sake, our belief, faith and love
deepens
One thing I have noticed is that as we become more and more
serious about God and going his way, as we become more and more
earnest and sincere in our effort to follow him, as we actively
look for sins in our own life and try to get rid of them for
his sake, as we do things "for his sake", we find our belief
getting deeper and deeper, our faith getting deeper and deeper.
Thus we see that "works" bring belief and faith, that they
breed it. Is this faith that is bred by being earnest about
God, by trying to please him by improving ourselves, perhaps
the faith that the Bible is talking about when it says we are
justified by faith? I have noticed something else, too. Our
love for God and for our fellow man deepens as we in sincerity
and earnestness try to change ourselves for his sake. We may
have a lot of resentment and hatred in our heart toward people
and society and may think "love your neighbor" is just
impossible for us, a mental gymnastic that we just can't
manage. But as we become earnest about God and going his way,
as we try, the hatred starts just automatically fading away and
we find ourselves able to love. And we start loving.
