On patriotism

People in all countries are taught that their country is the best, that they should love their country, support it, be true to it. The populace is taught patriotism. They are taught this for a reason. The leaders of the country want the support of the population in time of war. Thus governments employ propaganda to mold the minds of the masses and instill patriotism. We do it. Hitler did it in Nazi Germany. Stalin did it. Chairman Mao did it. All governments do it. What about patriotism and allegiance to country? What do you think? Suppose you are living in some wicked Sodom? Should you be supportive of a Sodom? Should you love a Sodom just because it is your country? Suppose you were a citizen of Nazi Germany when it was gassing millions of Jews. Would high patriotism have been in order there? The highest allegiance of the true Christian is to that Most High God and the way of Goodness, Morality and Truth that he stands for. And, as Jesus said, you cannot serve two masters. The highest duty of the righteous, good man is to stand true to that which is right, to do that which is right. That duty stands far above duty to country. And standing up for what is right means standing up against that which is wrong. The first commandment is to love God and serve him. Loving God, serving God, following God, means standing up for Goodness, Morality, and Truth — and standing against Evil.

What is love of a country? What does the idea mean to you? Is it love for the physical land itself? There are many beautiful lands all over the world. Is it love for the people of the country? Are the people of your country any better morally than people in other lands? Is it pride in the accomplishments of your country? But accomplishment is not morality and goodness and Morality and Goodness is what is important. In what ways is your country better than other countries of the world?

Should you love your country just because your government tells you how great and good it is? Governments lie and deceive.
